What have we collected?

Now that we have explained how the Siegers are being identified by means of colors, another word of explanation about the different data for the dogs.

 

One has tried to collect the following data for as many dogs as possible:

 

1.        The respective HD– and ED-status of the male

2. The number of its progeny

           (Red for dogs with more than 400 offspring)

3.        The breed value of the respective dogs

4.        The Ø HD-quote of its progeny

5.        The number of X-rayed descendants

6.        And its overal „impact“ on the breed (a multiplication            of the X-rayed progeny with the Ø HD-quote)

Additionally many remarks about he individual dogs have been added. Moving the cursor over the names in the chart will make them pop-up, for instance the placings at the Hauptzuchtschau, or the different results at the Sieger-Trials.

 

Let‘s have a look at the example. Zamb von der Wienerau has been marked in pink, so he is a Zuchtsieger, a winner at the BSZS = the Sieger Show, with the rating VA1 (= Vorzüglich Auslese = Excellent Select). Aly vom Vordersteinwald has received no coloring, so he never wan a major event. The respective results from these dogs or other interesting information have been included in the remarks, I have added them here left and right.

 

Both have received the HD-result „1“ (HD1 or a1), but no ED-status is available ( - ).

Zamb has had 1.595 offspring (Red because > 400), Aly had only 794 progeny.

The Breed Value of Zamb has currently increased to a 104, Aly keeps it at 66!

The Ø HD-quote of Zamb‘s descendants is 1,75 alltogether, a very bad result indeed. Aly on the other hand certifies an Ø HD-quote of a 1,10 with his offspring, which is a fabulous result. The Impact of Zamb on the breed is very important with 987, Aly‘s Impact is comparatively small.

 

The Impact will show the average HD-quote of the descendants multiplicated with the number of X-rayed progeny. The worse the HD-quote is, the bigger this number will be. It should however coincide with the number of X-rayed offspring. With an HD-quote of a flat 1 (because of the fact that all of the offspring had healthy hips), this number would be the same as the amount of X-rayed dogs.

 

Dogs in the chart with the biggest Impact:

 

1.        Uran vom Wildsteiger Land: 1.365 (848 X-rayed progeny x Ø HD-quote 1,61)

2.        Ulk von Arlett: 1.229 (719 X-rayed prog. x 1,71)

3.        Quando von Arminius: 1.189 (664 X-rayed prog. x 1,79)

4.        Jeck vom Noricum: 1.154 (717 X-rayed prog. x 1,61)

5.        Fedor von Arminius: 1.105 (635 X-rayed prog. x 1,74)

An illustrative example

 

For Olf vom Fürstendamm (who received an a-result in the GDR = DDR a), we will find 128 offspring registered in the SV-Genetics, 61 of them have been X-rayed within the SV and because the Ø HD-quote is merely 1,07, the Impact-number does not only stay very close to the number of X-rayed dogs, the overall Impact of this particular male on the whole event also remains rather minor, what should be regarded positively. (Individual dogs should not be dominating the breed.)

 

In this case however, it is rather sad, because this dog in particular, with its distinguished assets to fight against HD, should take as much influence as possible. You will notice with the mentioned remarks that Olf has been a threefold conformation Sieger in the DDR, and that he already introduced 158 HD1-dogs out of a 168 X-rayed individuals (before the re-entry of the DDR-dogs into SV), which after all means 94% HD1-offspring!

Summary of a bloodline

 

Whilst we more or less compile the numbers for the individuals at the top of the page (when sufficient data is available), we obtain a rough estimation about the importance of the particular bloodline (amounts of progeny) and its health in reference to HD, which results we can now compare easily with the other bloodlines/dogs. You will have to decide for yourself, if this is merely dalliance. In our opinion, these figures do provide us with conclusive information.

 

When we stick to the example of Zamb (bloodlinenumber 119), a bloodline that now leads to Bojan vom Pendler (who after all was VA8 2009), and Aly (line 31) leading to Carlo von der Bösen Bruderschaft (placed third at the BSP 2005), the numbers give us the following result:

So this is what we learn from the summary: in the bloodline with the number 119, a line of individual dogs with Zamb as an ancestor, the data of 9 males have been collected. The average of all the HD-quotes of the descendants of these males adds up to 1,59. The number of X-rayed offspring in this line is 3.123 and the Impact is accordingly: 5.096. Ultimately we come to the conclusion that the HD-factor for this line is 1,63, a result which is rather underwhelming. There can be no question of an improvement of the breed in terms of HD.

 

We can find another bloodline of individual dogs with Aly as a foundation dog in the line with the number 31. The data for 7 different males have been collected here, but the average of all of the HD-quotes of the progeny is slightly lower, with 1,54. The number of X-rayed offspring in this line is 1.719 and the Impact is consequently a lot smaller than Zamb‘s (more or less half of it). Ultimately we end up with an HD-factor which is substantially better, namely 1,45. There is yet hope!

 

In the chart, the color intensity will emphasize the power of the Impact. The more intense it is, the bigger the influence on the entire event. Two elements are responsible for this, on the one hand the number of X-rayed progeny (these are the dogs that will most likely stay in the breeding business), on the other hand the level of the average HD-Quote.

 

Underneath all of that, the Ø HD-quotes for the most important foundation dogs in the lineage are then summarized. At this stage, one can come to obvious conclusions and ways of comparison, and respectively to fast and unmistakable indications for breeding, should one for instance better leave a bloodline alone.

You will also find additional information for some of the DDR-dogs. The example of Utz vom Haus Hiller for instance shows (it was long before the era of the SV-Genetics), how many dogs have taken part in trials (P.), respectively how many were presented at the Körungen (K.) (breed survey).

The absolute reference in the matter of HD-prevention

In addition to all of the above, two „Top 20“-charts have been incorporated into the chart. They are documenting the strenuous efforts of the GDR (German Democratic Republic = DDR) in regard to the selection measures to repress HD and in an immediate comparison with the antagonists from the West at that, and of course, in a further comparison with the insufficient attempts of the SV up until today.

 

This is where you will be confronted with the absolute reference when it comes to eradicate Hip Dysplasia, the DDR-method. You might question yourself afterwards, why this doesn‘t work with the SV, respectively who is refusing to instate this (most successful) method and why?

Famous stars

At the beginning of the GSD-history, there was „Strongheart“, later we had „Rin Tin Tin“, (both have received, just like Lassie, a Star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles (1623 Vine Street).

 

In recent years we have watched „Jerry Lee“ as the star in the motion picture (K-9) and at the present day everyone knows „Kommissar Rex“, (in English „Inspector Rex“).

 

We are very pleased with the fact that we were able to include these famous representatives of the breed in our chart. They are taking good part in promoting the German Shepherd Dog, but you don‘t always get what you see, do you?

The example herewith demonstrates how at the top of the chart the lines directly underneath are all based on Mutz von der Pelztierfarm, and that later, two major bloodlines diverge, one for Xato von der bösen Nachbarschaft, and a second one that gathers the offspring of Cello von der Römerau.

Just to make sure that one can easily valuate the Ø HD-Quote, the chart features a small table showing some equivalents. In this manner you will soon get a feeling for the meaning of a certain number.

 

With the example we have just seen, the number 1,63 would indicate, that the result is even worse than with a fictitious distribution of progeny-diagnoses of a group over 40% HD1-hips and 60% with HD2.

With a number of 1,45 (as with Aly), one would range just underneath a fifty/fifty distribution of the HD-results (50% HD1 / 50% HD2). By means of pictogramms like small colored flags and other signs, these numbers are being emphasized throughout the chart, as the absence of HD should be one of the highest priorities during the assessment of our breeding status.

We hope these explanations will be useful to quickly see your way through the chart, most likely they will be totaly superfluous, and you will find your way without any of the given guidelines.
